Unisex Double Moss Stitch Scarf with Optional Scalloped Edging

This is a simple pattern that works up into little puffs of knit and purl stitches.  Made from a two-ounce skein of buffalo down, it is irresistibly soft.  If you knit it without adding the edging, it is a straightforward, masculine scarf.  Adding the edging gives a softer, more feminine look.

My scarf, knit on #4 needles, and Buffalo Gold fingering weight yarn, measures 4.5” x  50” without the edging, or 225 square inches.  But we are not stuck to a particular size.  You can vary the dimensions yourself, as long as the Width x Length is less than or equal to 225 square inches.  So your scarf could be a wild 2” x 112.5” or a more  classical 3”x 75.”

Knitting your scarf:

  1. Make a Gauge:

Determine stitches/inch (this is number “A”)

My gauge was 5.8 stitches per inch.

  1. Decide on width of scarf (Number “B”)

I wanted a scarf about 4 inches wide.

  1. A x B = C stitches.  C is the number of stitches to cast on.

    For my scarf, 4” wide x 5.8 stitches per inch, A x B = 23.2 = C

  1. Adjust C so that it is a multiple of 4 stitches, plus an extra two stitches added at the end to make a symmetrical pattern.

I rounded up to 24 stitches and added 2 for symmetry, for a total of 26

  1. Cast on C stitches

  1. Work the double moss stitch pattern until the scarf is as long as you wish.

      Row 1: K2 (P2, K2)* (this is a K2, P2 rib, with an extra K2 for symmetry)

Row 2: P2 (K2, P2)* (in other words, knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches)

Row 3: P2 (K2, P2)* (knit the purl stitches and purl the knit stitches)

      Row 4: K2 (P2, K2)*

Crochet edging:

    1. Crochet 2 single crochet stitches in two consecutive edge stitches of the scarf
    2. Chain 3 stitches
    3. Single crochet chain to the next edge stitch of the scarf
    4. Repeat 1-3 around the periphery of the scarf

Enjoy!
